How Does Your Lawn Look?
It’s that time of the year where we get calls that your lawn is not looking so good. It is a very strong possibility that you have patches of bentgrass in your lawn.
Creeping bentgrass is a spreading cool-season perennial grass that is commonly used for golf course greens, tees and fairways. Like other grasses, bentgrass can be considered a weed when it is present with other species of grass (blue, rye, fescue) as commonly seen on household lawns.
Because bentgrass spreads by stolons (by its root system), it is possible for bentgrass to encroach adjacent turf areas. Irrigation is almost always required for bentgrass to survive beyond where it is planted.
Creeping bentgrass likely indicates adequate-to-moist soils. It will not thrive in shaded or dry conditions. Cultural management is difficult as it will respond positively to most turfgrass maintenance practices.
Bentgrass becomes very 'puffy' when maintained at mowing heights above one inch. In mid to late July through early September Bentgrass in a home lawn looks at its worse. It looks as though the grass is lifting up and coming out of the ground.
What Can You Do?
Selective removal of patches may be accomplished by using a non-select herbicide on the affected area. Ten days to two weeks later the area can be reseeded with a desirable grass blend. The resultant smothering and radiation (heat) will kill all turf under the plastic. The area can be immediately re-seeded.
