A considerable amount of winter damage may even occur during a mild winter. Most winter damage to plants is caused by desiccation (a considerable loss of moisture). Evergreen plants lose moisture through their foliage all year. But in the winter lost moisture may not be replaced because frozen soils locks up moisture.
In addition, root systems that have been adversely affected by drought or disease are limited to the available soil moisture required. Newly installed plants can also desiccate and die completely since their root systems may have not been able to regain their former mass before the onset of winter. To reduce winter damage to your broadleaf evergreens an application of an anti-desiccant spray is applied late fall and again once during mid winter.
Any questions regarding this plant protection recommendation call and speak to our Plant Protection Specialists; or, if desired, a Plant Protection Specialist will review your plant care needs at your home, at your convenience, for free, without any obligation.
